Sebastian Vettel pitched up in Milan yesterday, at the Polytechnical College to speak to some engineering students, who will have been mostly the same age as him, 21.
I imagine they discussed things like whether they keep their milk in the communal fridge or on the windowsill, and which of them scrawls a note on the fridge door along the lines of, “Hands off, I’ve licked the cheese”.
Actually Vettel would love that kind of talk, his lippy smile would crack into a trademark ironic smile. But such studenty conversation is pure supposition, what is fact is that he revealed that driving for Ferrari is his ultimate dream,
“To drive for Ferrari would be my dream, but I hope to be able to become competitive with the top drivers as soon as possible.”
He revealed that his only friend among the current drivers is Kimi Raikkonen and also said something I found eery, speaking about his first run in an F1 car,
“I said to myself, ‘Dear Sebastian, you have no chance. The best you will manage is F3 or Touring cars.’ But then after 20 laps I started to feel more at ease.”
This is more or less exactly what Michael Schumacher said about his first run in an F1 car, the Jordan at Silverstone in 1991….read my biography of him, if you don’t believe me!
Many people see Vettel as the next Schuey. I don’t see that, because they are totally different characters with a very different approach to their racing. There is no doubt however that Vettel has a big talent, but as I’ve said here before, I’m looking forward to finding out how strong he is in the head and how good at making things happen for himself. Monza last year showed a lot of potential in both areas. Let’s see him do it week in and week out.
– Kimi is his only friend? Besides Lewis, I would have expected Kimi to have the least friends in the paddock. I guess it took Vettel’s sunshine-smile to break the Iceman.
i think where he is right now shows how good he is at making things happen for himself. as for keeping his head, he has shown this throughout his F1 career, from the very first race he took part in, as a 19 year old replacing kubica after the massive canada accident and finishing in the points to the fantastic win in Monza.
he could basically walk into any top team if he wanted, and if RBR don’t perform this year, you can be sure that he will not be short of offers. mclaren already wanted to sign him ahead of heikki (they wanted rosberg before heikki too!), ferrari would love to get vettel on board, it wouldn’t suprised me if mario theissen had some sort of deal with vettel to come back to BMW. along with kubica and alonso, he will shape F1 over the next few years (would include lewis but he’s married to mclaren).
and it couldn’t happen to a nicer, more genuine guy.
So he’s in Italy and they ask him his dream drive? I wonder what he would say if he was in the UK or Germany…
When does his Red Bull contract end? I wonder if he’s planning to replace Kimi in 2011???
Isn’t Vettel reportedly under the tutelage of Mr. Schumacher? That makes me wonder if he is not already under consideration and is being groomed for the position when Kimi leaves (is pushed out)…
