No sooner did I mention in a post earlier today that Nigel Stepney, former chief mechanic at Ferrari and the man behind the McLaren/Ferrari spy scandal of 2007, was working for an engineering firm in Essex, but a picture of him pops up in a media mail out by Superleague Formula, the racing series based on football teams.
As you can see, Nigel (on right) is working for Gigawave, who supply on board cameras to the series. The Superleague media people are having a bit of a laugh here because the photo above is prominent in their mail out, but is not captioned! And nowhere does it mention Stepney’s name.
Or maybe they don’t know..
Does this count as working in motor sport?

Hi, it seems Superleague Formula is really working with professionals… good thing then… All people deserves new opportunities. I think this is good news for the motorsport sector. And of course, Superleague Formula is the future of motorsports and a new way of living it, so why wouldn’t this count as working for motorsports?
By the way, the French circuit Magny Cours shall host the inaugural meeting of the second season of Superleague Formula. After the disappearance of F1 from the French circuit last year, the takeover of Superleague Formula shall be converted into one of the most attractive meetings expected by motorsport fans of the country.
For this same purpose, this year the closing of the championship will move from Jerez to Madrid, where this time, supporters of Atletico de Madrid will have their opportunity to urge on the car of their team onto the circuit of Jarama in Madrid at the end of October.
Final dates of the calendar will be informed in the next few days as negotiations are still in process with Corinthians and Flamengo to take the championship to Brazil at the end of the year. Other circuits in Malaysia and South Africa have also shown relevant interests in the series. provisional calendar is the following:

It seems that Superleague Formula is really hiring professionals then … I think everyone deserves a new opportunity. If this guy did what you said, i am sure he was just following order from others, so was it really his fault? I think Superleague Formula has introduced a new concept within the motorsport industry, and for sure that the future is there!!

BUT This superleageformula thing is what? I have looked at the site and cannot work out whether the race teams are meant to play football on the track or the footballers are going to race the cars, o0n a pitch, doesn’t make any sense at all to me. One thing we do not need in motor racing is football mentality.

Pablo: You just repeated what it said on the FS website. So the drivers will be footballers. You are kidding right! Who is financing the race teams if not the football clubs? Formula Ford-style carnage will be but a mere shadow of what is to come. Points will need to be awarded for any complete lap. As I said before football mentality is not what is wanted on or around the racetrack.
rpaco: Drivers are drivers, not footballers. Seems you have a comprehension problem. What SF does, is really giving the power back to drivers as cars are alll the same … Fans, sponsors and the race teams themselves are financing everything… and as football fans are counted by millions around the world, there you’ve got the answer…easy, isn’t it? I think that all kinds of mentalities are needed in order to boost motorsport interest around the world … or maybe it is just that you are not a a motorsport fan… I have been in a Superleague Formula event and I must say that it is really superior to any Formula 1 event.. the feelings and passion towards the clubs’ colours of football fans really makes a difference. In order to give an opinion, I think you should first try it by yourself.
But what is the difference between SF and say, A1GP, or GP2? They run identical cars, A1GP has them in National colours, GP2 has some serious names behind its teams (as in the families associated with F1 teams of the past and future).
What does SF give us but either confused drivers or confused football fans? The Football teams don’t pay the drivers, or own the cars, (as stated on the website) so why are the cars in football colours?
I think anybody who has only ever been to an F1 race, or watched it on TV, needs to find their local racing circuit and watch everything that happens there, from ALMS to F3000, and DTM, and Touring Cars and 2CV Endurance racing, before they decide that SF is the best racing series anywhere.
